The Friday Mosque – Juma Masjid (isiZulu)

Lesi sakhiwo asigcini nje ngokuba yindawo yokukhonza – kodwa futhi sithathwa njengesizinda sokuhlanganela somphakathi wamaSulumane – enye yezinto zokuqala ezenziwa nguMphrofethi uMohammed ngesikhathi engena eMedina kwaba ngukwakha indawo yokukhonza (i-mosque), nokuyinto efanayo neyenziwa ngamaSulumane okuqala ukufika eNatali ngasekupheleni kweminyaka yama-1800.

Indawo yeJuma Masjid, esemgwaqweni uGrey Street eThekwini, yathengwa ngo-1881, kanti imosque yokuqala ukwakhiwa khona yayimumatha amakholwa angaphansana nje kuka-50. Ngokuhamba kweminyaka isakhiwo lesi sakhula sanwetshwa, kanti kuke kwaba khona isikhathi lapho iJuma Masjid ike yaba yi-mosque enkulu kunawo wonke emazweni aseningizimu yomhlaba, imumatha amakholwa afinyelela ku-7000.

Igama elithi ‘Juma Masjid’ elihunyushwa ngokuthi ‘indawo yokukhonza yangoLwesihlanu’ njengoba yayiyindawo yokuhlanganela yeningi lamakholwa enkolo yobuSulumane eThekwini emikhulekweni yangoLwezihlanu – nanamuhla imigwaqo eyakhele uGrey Street eThekwini iyaye ibonakale iqaqele inqwaba yezimoto ezinye zipake ngazimbili noma ngazintathu emgwaqweni uma kungoLwesihlanu amakholwa eze emkhulekweni wasemini. Kwabangeyona inkolo yamaSulumane leli bhilidi lalaziwa ngokuthi “yiMosque ekuGrey Street’ noma yibhilidi elide eThekwini njengoba, nakuba kunzima ukukukholwa lokhu, iJuma Masjid kwakungelinye lamabhilidi amade kakhulu eThekwini namaphethelo ngaleso sikhathi.

Njengesikhungo esikhulukazi samaSulumane ayehlala eNatali, lesi sakhiwo sasinezindawo zokufunda, izindawo zokudayisa – okwakuthi ingeniso yakhona isetshenziselwe ukunakekela sona lesi sakhiwo – kanjalo nendawo yokuhlanganela yezishoshovu ezazilwa nombuso wengcindezelo. Ngaleyo ndlela le ndawo yayingagcini nje ngokuvikela amalungelo amaSulumane kuphela: ngo-1890 iziphathimandla zeJuma Masjid zamema abalimi iningi labo ababengabomdabu wamaHindu ukuba bazodayisa imikhiqizo yabo emagcekeni alesi sakhiwo ngemuva kokuba kwakushaywe imithetho ebavimbayo yedolobha nemithetho ebandlululayo eyayihlose ukubavimba ekutheni bakwazi ukudayisa ngokukhululeka imikhiqizo yabo njengabahwebi eThekwini. UMkhandlu weDolobha laseThekwini wazama ukuvala imakethe yalesi sakhiwo, kodwa ngemuva kwezingxoxo neziphathimandla zalesi sakhiwo kwavunyelwana ngokuthi kuqhubeke ukudayisa emakethe, kodwa kube nemali yentela yopondo abayishumi eyayikhokhwa kukopeletsheni weTheku njalo ngonyaka.

Ziningi ezinye izindlela ezasetshenziswa ukuvikela le ndawo yokukhonza. Ngo-1960 kwakugujwa iminyaka engu-50 kwasungulwa isizwe esibumbene saseNingizimu Afrika yangaleso sikhathi (i-Union of South Africa) kwase kuba nemikhosi eminingi eyayihlelelwe lowo mgubho. Kwahlatshwa ikhwelo elabizwa nge “Festival Boycott” lokuba kudutshwe imigubho yoMkhandlu weDolobha leTheku. Esitatimendeni, izinhlangano ezihlangene (iJoint Congress) zathi zinombono wokuthi “abantu bebala, ikakhulukazi, abanakho abangakubonga kulo mgubho njengoba kule minyaka engamashumi amahlanu yokusungulwa kweNingizimu Afrika ebumbene lo mkhosi omayelana nayo bekwakhiwa imithetho yengcindezelo phezu kweminye”. Ababhikishi bacelwa ukuba babambe imibhikisho emelene nalo mgubho nemihlangano yokuthandaza emathempelini nasemasontweni akhele iTheku namaphethelo, kanti iJuma Masjid kwaba yisona sizinda sababhikishi bamaSulumane.

Yebo, izikhathi sezishintshile – asemaningi amabhilidi manje amade ayedlulayo iMosque yakuGrey Street – kodwa iJuma Masjid isalokhu iyiyona nhliziyo yedolobha kubantu abaningi, futhi iyohlale ikhumbuleka kumakhulu ezinkulungwane zabantu abangene eminyango yayo, iningi labo elalidinga ukukhuseliswa olakeni lukahulumeni wobandlululo.
